WHAT IS SUBSIDY PUBLISHING?

A subsidy publisher assists an author in getting his/her manuscript published. There are many reasons why an author may choose a subsidy publishing arrangement. First, the author may want a larger return from the sale of his/her book. Secondly, an author may want more control over the content and format of the book. Thirdly, the author may have exhausted all other publishing possibilities and having worked long and hard on the manuscript, wants to see it published.

In a subsidy publishing agreement the author is responsible for editing, design, composition, and production costs. The publisher will manage these prepublication processes, assuring the author of a quality, market-ready book. The publisher provides the ISBN number, the Library of Congress Control Number, access to Amazon.com, the publisher's online catalog, and such other marketing helps as may be appropriate to the book.

A subsidy publication will carry the publisher’s imprint.

In a traditional publishing agreement the publisher makes money from the sale of books, and the author receives a small royalty. In most subsidy publishing agreements the publisher receives an up-front fee and one hundred percent of the sales revenues are returned to the author.

Quill House Publishers does subsidy publishing.

We believe that the purpose of publishing is to get your book into the hands of readers, not to put books on our shelves or in your garage. Individuals, corporations, organizations, and associations who want control over the content and format of their book or those who do not know the mechanics of preparation and production, find subsidy publishing an excellent option.

We exercise an editorial judgment on all subsidy published books. This protects the integrity of our imprint , enabling us to assure you that we can get your book on Amazon.com and that your book will get a hearing at the bookstores. If we judge your book to have publishing potential, as the first step we will work with you to develop the marketing plan. Once we have a marketing plan, we can help you project the number of books to be sold and therefore the number to be printed. Then we can estimate the costs for getting your book edited, designed, and printed. After your book is published Quill House will continue to support your book. We invest staff time in helping you execute your marketing plan. We do order fulfillment for you, including orders from our website catalog, a fax number, a toll free telephone number, and a post office box address.

There is an axiom that says, "Publishers don't sell books, bookstores don't sell books --authors sell books." Whether you publish your book as a royalty publication, a co-publication, a subsidy publication, or self-publish the success of your book will depend, in large part, on your efforts.

We are not prepared to read unsolicited manuscripts. Please send synopsis and a couple chapters. Th electronic file is helpful in estimate the number of pages and thus the costs.

Using the informtion at the bottom of this page, please email us telephone us, or send us a letter to begin the conversation.
