How Adolescence Changes Children into Adults

by Harris. C. Faigel, M.D.

Adolescence, like alchemy, is an almost magical process that transforms children into adults. It is a personal passage through time, a difficult and demanding journey of exploration, at times stormy, at times dull. Adolescence is the bridge, the alchemic change that makes the journey from childhood to adulthood happen. The voyage makes adolescence what it is, the possibility of a transmutation of the base metal of childhood into adulthood golden with opportunity. And teens searching for autonomy make claims on adult privilege that perplex and challenge parents.

Dr. Harris Faigel writes about the incredibly diverse dimensions of adolescent development and change, including concerns about teens’ bodies, minds, the worlds in which they live, sex and sexuality, health, delinquency, schools, family relationships.

This is an invaluable resource for parents as they seek to understand the behavior, motivations, and growth of their adolescent children.

Dr. Harris Faigel is a cinical professor of pediatrics at Tufts University School of Medicine and the former director of University Health Services at Brandeis University who specializes in adolescent medicine. Dr. Faigel graduated from Harvard College and the University of Buffalo School of Medicine, trained in pediatrics at the Boston Floating Hospital and in adolescent medicine at the Children’s Hospital in Boston. Dr. Faigel founded the first medical care services for adolescents in a U.S. Air Force hospital at Andrews Air Force Base in Washington, D.C., offered the first consultation service for adolescents at Georgetown University School of Medicine, and opened the first adolescent medical services for teenagers with disabilities at the Kennedy Memorial Hospital for Children in Boston.
